BRIDGE BEARING PADS

Bearing Pads In General:

Bridge bearing pads are structural elements used in bridge construction to support and distribute loads between bridge components. They are typically placed between the bridge deck and its supporting structure, such as piers or abutments.
These pads serve several purposes:
1. Load Distribution: Bridge bearing pads help distribute the weight of the bridge and traffic loads evenly across the supporting structure, preventing concentrated stress points.
2. Movement Absorption: They accommodate movements caused by thermal expansion, contraction, and settlement, allowing the bridge to flex and move without causing damage.
3. Vibration Dampening: Bridge bearing pads can also reduce vibrations caused by traffic or environmental factors, enhancing the comfort and safety of bridge users.
Bridge bearing pads are commonly made from materials such as elastomeric rubber, neoprene, or reinforced concrete, depending on the specific requirements of the bridge and its location. They come in various shapes and sizes to accommodate different load capacities and movement ranges.

Standards:

Bridge bearing pads are manufactured under different standards and codes of several organizations like BRITISH STANDARD, AASHTO, and EUROPEAN NORMS.

In Pakistan, the NHA has given a different set of standards according to those bearing pads that have been tested. These standards are as follows

  • Tensile strength: D 412
  • Elongation at Break: D 412
  • Compression set 22hrs at: 67oC D 395 (Method B)
  • Tear Strength: D 624 (Die C)
  • Hardness: (Shore A)D 2240
  • Low-temperature brittleness: D 736
  • Low-temperature stiffness: D 797
  • Ozone resistance 20% strain: D 1149
  • 100 hours at: 38o C.

Interbuna SL.Spain

Elastomeric,Pot, Siesmic Bearing Pads

Interbuna products incorporate various materials for elastomeric bearings, including S235JR quality steel, natural rubber (NR), and polychloroprene rubber (CR). It’s important to note that there are three rubber qualities: natural rubber (NR), polychloroprene rubber (CR), and NR lined with CR.
Reinforced elastomeric bearings from Interbuna feature one or several highly resistant steel sheets, depending on the model, joined to the metal through meticulous vulcanization. In unassembled elastomeric supports, only elastomer is used, with interior steel plates fully covered to prevent rust.
All materials utilized in Interbuna’s elastomeric supports conform to the specific requirements outlined in the EN 1337-3 standard, with PTFE meeting the standards established by EN 1337-2 unless specified otherwise.
Interbuna ensures the traceability of all components used in its products.
