GENERAL INSTALLATION MANUAL FOR BRIDGE EXPANSION JOINTS

1.2 Construction and Function of the Expansion Joint

The expansion joint is a simplified version of a modular expansion joint and is therefore designed for movements requiring only a small amount of movement capacity. In this context, a single gap type joint structure is used where two edge profiles are configured to be fastened above the reinforcement frame to the concrete structure. During horizontal and vertical movement, forces are transmitted through edge structures and are anchored into adjacent concrete structures.

1.1 Purpose of the expansion joint

Therefore, because of this reason as well, joint expansion creates a load-bearing bridge which bridges the gap between the abutment and the bridge or between the individual bridge sections. Thus, these expansion joints are able to maintain an adequate gap at the top of the pillars and at the bottom of the abutments owing to the movement in the pillars and abutments, temperature differences, traffic loads, creeping concrete, and shrinkage of concrete. . Only then is a good driving comfort with as low noise immersion as possible for the passing traffic. Therefore, expansion joints will be necessary in order to compensate for the fact that this was done in the first place

1.2 Construction and Function of the Expansion Joint

The Bridge Expansion Joints is a simplified version of modular expansion joints for small movement capacities. In the end, therefore, the structure of the joint was determined to be a single gap joint type consisting of two edge profiles that are fastened to the concrete structure above the reinforcement frame. Therefore, the forces transmitted horizontally and vertically are transferred through edge structures and anchored into concrete structures adjacent to these edge structures.

  1. Safety Measures
To adopt safety measures, steps will be taken while replacing the existing expansion joints on the bridge. Therefore, it is necessary for it to be installed with expansion joints in order to prevent the leakage of the pipe

2.1 To complete this job on either South bond or North bond, we need to close half carriage way in Total Width. It is important to install the expansion joints before installing the expansion joints to ensure that the expansion joints are able to perform their function

Therefore, it is obvious that the design of the bridge expansion joints is an indispensable part of the entire bridge design process, and it can then be said that the expansion joints are an integral part of the whole process.

2.2 Therefore, diversion will be set up 400 meters before the bridge for the next phase of the project to take place on the half carriageway with sign boards, warning lights, safety cones as well as flags and tapes to alert people of the impending work..

2.3 Therefore, during the diversion, I, along with 2-3 safety persons, will wave flags at the beginning of the diversion in an effort to warn or indicate all traffic approaching. During the night, we will have all the warning lights on, and we will have two safety people at the site who can assist with any issues that may arise.

2.4 After completing half-width, the same will be adopted for the remaining half carriageway.

2.5 Replicate above all steps for another side of the motorway after completing one side.

  1. INSTALLATION / REPLACEMENT
3.1 Preparation of the Joint Gap (recess)
The recess must be adjusted to the size and shape of the expansion joint. It is advantageous to check the following points to avoid difficulties when the expansion joint is set-out:

Check the rough dimensions of the recess
Check the geodetic points.
Check the transverse and longitudinal inclination.
Therefore, you will have to make sure that the bridge is at the correct distance from the abutment or in the centre of the bridge plate.

Check the existing reinforcement according to drawings.

In general, the reinforcement is installed at distances of 200 mm. Missing reinforcement

is to be replaced by steel rods (Rebar), which are placed at relevant depths.

Reinforcement that interferes with the installation of the expansion joint must be bent away accordingly. Therefore, larger reinforcement should be heated to red heat as soon as possible to avoid breaking or a reduction in ductility. Therefore, the reinforcement can only be removed by the Engineer after consulting the Engineer.

The recess shall be thoroughly cleaned. If required, the surface is to be roughened by picking. All loose material has to be removed with air pressure before concreting.

3.2 Shuttering plates
Therefore, the space between the bottom edge of the expansion joint and the top edge of the recess bottom must be closed with shutter plates in order to prevent the concrete from flowing into the gap in the joint.

Therefore, the authors of this study conclude that all of these characteristics act to ensure the success of a joint expansion project, so they should be taken into account. Thus, we consider this a critical issue. It is thanks to the given data that we are able to be able to spot expansion ventures that are likely to be profitable from those which will not. Therefore We should, therefore, distinguish between an expansion joint that will prove to be successful and one that will prove to be unsuccessful:

For this purpose, the expansion joint is laid on cross-pieces

at the height of about 400 to

600mm above the joint gap. Then the shuttering plates with a thickness of approx. 1.5 mm are welded to the expansion joint. Gaps

resulting from cross-pieces have to be closed before lowering the expansion joint into the final position.

Therefore, after installing the shuttering plates, ensure that they are installed in a manner such that they are close to the recess after the expansion joint has been lowered. During the required period, the plates must be fixed to the reinforcement using a fastening wire.

3.3 Fixings
3.3.1 Filling of Gap:
Therefore, it is advisable to fill the gap between deck slabs with Thermos pore sheets covered with ply on both sides. Therefore, the thickness of the Thermos pore sheets should be determined according to the gap following the installation of Thermos pore joints, where the joint should be at the same level with the level of the wearing course.

3.3.2 Preparation of Expansion joint (Assembling):
Prepare Expansion joint modules by assembling and installing the Anchoring system provided by the manufacturer accordingly. An expansion joint anchoring system may be available in the shape of welded anchor bars or the shape of Unbolts as in the picture.

3.3.3 Placement of Expansion joint and leveling:
Therefore, you should place the expansion joint onto the block out of the wall and level it using the levelling bars as shown in the pictures. The expansion joint must therefore be placed completely in the middle of the expansion joint in order to guarantee its proper functioning. Therefore, the expansion joints on the bridges should be replaced on a regular basis it they are to have the best possible performance in order to ensure a long and healthy life span for them

3.4 Concreting:
Therefore applying the concrete, the expansion joint’s position must be recorded. Only after proper installation the Engineer shall permit to fill in the concrete.

Therefore, before you apply concrete, you really have to wet the gap well so that water doesn’t drain away from the fresh concrete.

3.5 After Concreting:
Therefore, after the concrete has been defendant, any water vapors or cavities should be removed by vibrating it. So a complete vibrating machine is recommended after an hour. Then the angles of leveling on the concrete, bars, offenses and nuts should be removed, and the concrete should be leveled. Therefore, it is imperative that you spray some water on the concrete after you have tightened all of the anchor nuts in order to make the concrete stronger and to give it greater strength. Accordingly, the concrete may require 24 hours to adhere to its shape. Consequently, when the concrete is completely dry, it may be opened to vehicular traffic when the concrete is completely cured.
